The sensor portion of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company's intelligent tire system consists of a 3-diameter, 1.3-thick, lightweight intelligent tire sensor, about the size of a hockey puck, that is fastened to the tire innerliner, where it measures cavity temperature and pressure and transmits data every three minutes. An in-cab receiver, which can be programmed with each tire's identification and the truck number, logs data. It sends the data upstream to the mine management system unit in the cab. Goodyear's system is the industry's first commercially available intelligent tire system that will help operators control tire costs and significantly lower downtime due to tire issues. Rick Laske, project leader for The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company's development of a replicate tire from NASA's Apollo space missions in the 1970s, checks tread plate widths of the wire-mesh structure. Goodyear-NASA's replicate tire includes four major components in the tire and wheel design: mesh, tread, inner-frame and hub. The mesh is woven from piano wire while the tread is a series of hinged metal strips which protect the mesh from impact, allowing for movement of the tire while maintaining flexibility, and providing increased contact area for floatation in the lunar soil. A team of Goodyear and NASA engineers created 12 replicate tires as part of a jointly funded project. Engineers at The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company test tire designs for noise levels in a specially built room, the anechoic laboratory. A revolving drum spins the tire and wheel, without a need for the vehicle to be running, thus eliminating any outside interference from engine noise. Goodyear’s prototype non-pneumatic tire, under development for use first on the moon and eventually on Mars, builds on technology pioneered by Goodyear in the 1960s for the Apollo Lunar Roving Vehicle’s (LRV) wire mesh moon tire (shown here). During the past year, Goodyear has been using computer modeling tools to analyze the Apollo lunar rover tire, along with prototype pneumatic tires and non-pneumatic concepts, in order to build a baseline understanding of the wheel’s mechanics and the challenges of the lunar environment. In preliminary stress tests on future tires at The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, red indicates areas of stress in a tire. Other colors show varying levels of stress that can be changed in computer engineering before tires are actually built. Computers also can show how a tire will react to a specific vehicle before it is designed to be fitted on that vehicle. Illustration shows how the Goodyear-Siemens VDO tire monitoring system would look and work. The sensor/transponder, about the size of a watch battery, is cured into the Goodyear tire. It identifies the tire, takes its temperature and reads its air pressure. This information is relayed to the driver via a Siemens-developed radio frequency/antenna/interpretation/display system.
